Who is Terry Shaw?
Hi, I’m Terry Shaw. I was born in Tacoma, Washington in April, 1952. I grew up in the small town of
Gig Harbor, Washington where my mother also grew up.
From early life I was exposed to musicians. My grandfather sang and played the guitar and fiddle while
my uncle played the classical piano. My older siblings also played piano and trumpet. I started on
the ukulele at age seven and later played the trumpet in school band until the ninth grade.
At age 10 I started playing the drums, then the guitar. By the seventh grade I was singing and playing
guitar semi-professionally, putting on dances at local grange halls and playing school dances. I took a
few lessons and learned from a friend at the beginning but eventually taught myself by listening to recordings.
By the time I was in high school I was playing several engagements per month.
I studied music for two years in college where I had also started to play piano, banjo, and fiddle. For the
next fifteen years I worked at Monte Vista guitar shop, the largest guitar retailer in the Northwest at the time.
There I learned to service and repair instruments and started teaching various instruments. During this time
I developed the Keywheel Music Theory System.
I continued playing guitar in my commercial rock band, Oasis, and also started to get interested in bluegrass
and old time music, forming several groups over the next two decades. I have also operated my own recording
studio for the past twenty-five years working with songwriters and playing on and producing many rock, country,
bluegrass, and gospel albums.
